Light bulbs – It used to be that you went to the store, grabbed your 60 watt bulb and you were on your way. However, there are now more options than ever. Some bulbs are better for the environment than others, and others will save on your energy bill. Understanding the difference between the different types of bulbs will save you money and is not as hard as you might think. Additionally, if you find you still have questions, getting in touch with your Beverly Hills electrician at H Electric can help you understand what options may be best for you.
Incandescent Bulbs
These are the typical “old fashioned” bulbs. They produce light by heating a tungsten filament with electrical current. They are the cheapest to produce, but do have the worst energy efficiency rating. However, for “small jobs” it can sometimes be the more economical way to go.
Halogen Bulbs
These work in much the same way as incandescent bulbs; however, they are designed to be more energy efficient. However, halogen bulbs have a gas inside that causes the vaporized tungsten to remain in the filament instead of depositing inside the bulb. This helps the bulb last longer and burn hotter than a traditional bulb.
CFL (Compact Florescent Lamps)
This type of light works completely differently. The fluorescent gas inside the bulb creates ultraviolet light when electricity hits it. The coating of the lamp turns this ultraviolet light into a visible spectrum. CFL’s are the most energy efficient of the three types of bulbs.
As you can see, each of the types of bulbs has benefits and drawbacks. Understanding what options are available will help you make the best decision for you.
